About Asters
The English called asters either "asters" or "starworts." Aster, Latin for "star," refers to the flower's star-like shape. "Wort" means root, which applies to plants with healing properties.

Lindley's Aster

  • a woodland or forest species
  • grows to about 40 inches tall
  • one, central flower stalk and several large, heart-shaped leaves at the base
  • light to medium blue color
Willow Aster
  • a wetland species
  • grows close to 30 inches in height
  • produces several leafy stalks with white-to-pinkish flowers near the top
  • long leaves resemble those of a willow

Many-Flowered Aster

  • grassland plant that grows in prairies, meadows, and ditches
  • has a low, spreading growth form with branching stems and tiny leaves
  • small, white flowers are densely packed along the stems
Smooth Aster
  • grows in grasslands and disturbed areas
  • several leafy stalks sprout bunches of pale blue flowers
  • produces large stands and beautiful displays

New England Aster

  • a prairie and forest species
  • tall, erect plant that can grow to 24 inches
  • has leafy stalks and large bluish-purple flowers
  • one of the largest and "showiest" asters
Western Silvery Aster
  • rare sandy prairie and forest species
  • growth pattern is low and branching, reaching a maximum of only 15 inches tall
  • leaves are covered in dense silvery-white hairs
  • produces delicate-looking mauve-colored flowers
